Malnicherra Tea Estate, Sylhet

Malnicherra tea estate is the largest and oldest tea garden in Bangladesh and in the whole of subcontinent. It is located within one kilometer of Sylhet city, next to another big tea garden Lakkatura, along the Sylhet airport road. The first commercial tea industry in Bangladesh was started in 1854 with the establishment of Malnicherra Tea Estate in Sylhet, covering an area of 1,500 acres. However, the coverage of the garden has now almost doubled.

Malnicherra tea garden is always at the top of the list of favorite places of tourists from home and abroad. As the tea gardens are very close to the city of Sylhet, tourists rush to the vast green realm of Malnicherra tea Estate right after visiting the shrine of the great sufi Hazrat Shahjalal.

Malnicherra is a huge tea garden, so there are many entrances to it. You can enter any of these entrances and start visiting the tea garden. However, to avoid trouble, it would be better to take permission from the authorities before entering the garden. Then walk through the rows of tea plants and see its beauty. If you wish, you can also visit the garden bungalow. There are more tea gardens next to Malnicherra like Ali Bahar tea garden, Lakkatura Tea Garden, Tarapur Tea Garden etc.

There are gardens after gardens throughout this vast hilly region of Sylhet. As far as the eye can see there is a spread of green in layers, greenery all around. It is as if nature has spread a green carpet under the blue sky here. Green cultivation on hilly slopes and hillock-surrounded plains. As if all the beauties of nature have come together here. Besides tea, oranges and rubber are also cultivated in the Malnicherra tea garden.

A saying of former US Ambassador K. Thomas about tea garden in Sylhet is worth quoting. As he got off the plane and walked through the Malnicherra tea estate, he said: “The world is so beautiful, you can’t understand it without seeing the Malnicherra tea garden.”

Dhaka to Sylhet by Bus

Many buses from Dhaka’s Gabtali, Mohakhali, Sayedabad and other terminals go to Sylhet everyday. The buses leave at regular intervals from morning till 12.45 am. AC buses of Green Line Paribahan, Ena Paribahan, Saudia S Alam Paribahan and Shyamali Paribahan ply on this route. Fare 800 to 1100 taka. Besides, non-AC buses of Shyamali Paribahan, Hanif Enterprise, Unique Service, ENA Paribahan also go to Sylhet. Fare 400 to 470 taka. Buses of Ena Paribahan start from Mohakhali and go to Sylhet via Tongi Ghorashal.

Dhaka to Sylhet by Train

The intercity train Parabat Express leaves Dhaka’s Kamalapur railway station for Sylhet at 06.20 am every day of the week except Tuesday. Jayantika Express leaves at 11:15 am every day of the week, Upaban Express leaves at 08:30 am every day of the week except Wednesday and Kalani Express leaves at 03:00 pm every day except Friday. Dhaka to Sylhet train ticket price range from 80 taka to 1099 taka depending on the seat.

From Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Biman Bangladesh, United Air, Regent Air, Novo Air and US Bangla Air fly daily to Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.

Sylhet city to Malnicherra tea garden

From Sylhet city, you can reach Malnicherra tea estate by rickshaw, autorickshaw or car. It may take ten minutes by car or CNG-powered autorickshaw from Amberkhana Point to the tea garden, and about half an hour to go by rickshaw.

Hotel & Resort in Sylhet

There is no shortage of residential hotels and resorts in Sylhet city, you can find any type of hotel according to your need and ability. Some of the well known hotels are: Hotel Hill Town, Gulshan, Dargah Gate, Surma, Kaikobad etc. There are many quality hotels at a very low rent in Lal Bazar area. In Hotel Anurag, single room is 400 taka (two people can stay comfortably), three bed room is 500 taka (normally 4 people can stay).

There are various quality residential hotels on Mazar / Dargah Road for overnight stay. Room rent is from 500 taka to 5000 taka.

Where to Eat

There are three good dining hotels in Zindabazar, Sylhet. The hotels are: Panch Bhai, Panshi and Palki. They serve about 29 types of Bharta (mashed fish and vegetables).

Besides, Hotel Pakshi and Hotel Asia are standard food hotels in Bandar Bazar, the center of the city.
